Whats are dust mites?
Dust mites (microscopic mites) are part of the spider family. There are over 50,000 types of mites, but only a few are the most common cause of respiratory allergies in kids and adults. Their lifespan is only 6 weeks, but they can reproduce very quickly. Their excrement causes allergies when inhaled. They feed on skin cells shed by humans and thrive in dark, damp, and warm environments.
Where are house dust mites found?
Ideal places for their survival and development are house dust, mattresses, carpets, curtains, bedding, sofas, stuffed toys, and others. When we lie on a bed or sofa, beat a carpet or pillows, we spread these allergens into the air. When inhaled, they can cause allergies, as well as rhinitis, asthma, bronchitis, sinusitis, and conjunctivitis.
What is the life cycle of house dust mites?
The most favorable conditions for their development and reproduction are temperatures above 25°C, humidity around and above 75%, and food. Their main food source is exfoliated skin. It is estimated that the average adult sheds 1.5 g of dead skin cells every day, which is food for approximately 1 million mites. During their life cycle, the metabolic products (excrement) they excrete contain a digestive enzyme (protein) called DerP1, which is the main cause of allergies to house dust. Every day, humans inhale large amounts of house dust, along with the excrement of mites. The protein Der P1 contained in the excrement attaches itself to the mucous membranes of the respiratory tract and affects the respiratory system, reaching the immune cells and triggering a reaction and inflammatory processes.
Allergies and symptoms to dust mites.
Domestic dust mites are a major cause of year-round allergic rhinitis. They trigger symptoms specific to respiratory allergies:

The symptoms tend to worsen in late summer and early fall, when temperatures and indoor humidity are higher. If not treated properly, allergies to house dust mites can worsen and develop into allergic asthma or cause atopic dermatitis: redness and itching of the face, scalp, and skin folds.
What can you do about allergies?
Allergy to dust mites is common and impairs the quality of life of people who suffer from it. Avoiding the allergen is usually the first step in combating allergies, and minimizing contact with the allergen will limit the onset of symptoms.
