Gyms & Workout Centers

These days, people are trying to live healthier and more balanced lives, which makes them look for different sports activities. Gyms and workout centers are visited by lots of people every day, so their owners need to keep them super clean. Choosing the right cleaning products and keeping sports equipment and gyms spotlessly clean will boost their rating and popularity among visitors.

The main sources of air pollution in training halls are atmospheric air (dust is visible to the eye, with the highest concentration of dust on the floor), furniture, equipment and furnishings, heating and ventilation systems, visitors, and the sports activities of visitors inside the premises.

Where and what are the sources of pollution in a sports center?

  • The area where the sports equipment is located: They are touched by people who are sweaty when they are active. That is why the equipment must be cleaned daily with appropriate cleaning products that are safe for humans.

  • The shower area and sanitary facilities: They also require special attention from the cleaning team. Showers, shower curtains, bathtubs, and even sinks can contain dangerous bacteria such as Legionella, which can cause Legionnaires' disease.

  • The constant flow of guests can create conditions for the emergence and spread of infectious diseases, as there may be sick people, pathogen carriers, or people with latent diseases (without clinical manifestations) among them.

  • High CO2 levels: It is normal for CO2 levels to be high, especially since the fat-burning mechanism (known as expiration) involves breathing out, or more precisely, exhaling oxidized fats.

  • Mold (fungi): In enclosed spaces where people sweat, exercise, bathe, and swim, there is inevitably moisture and mold in the air that you breathe. Moisture leads to mold growth. Mold colonies spread by releasing invisible particles into the air called spores, which when inhaled can cause allergies (about 80% of allergic people are sensitive to mold) and even infectious diseases.

  • Microscopic organic particles (particulate matter) can be isolated in the air in any gym. These particles are composed of epithelial cells, parts of the coating of equipment that are released through friction during use, nitrates, sulfates, dust, organic chemicals, and metals, which are so small that inhaling them is inevitable.

  • Perfume and deodorants: Last but not least, there are countless people in the gym who have come to train, sprayed with perfume, which affects your hormonal balance. It has been proven that strong perfumes and deodorants (along with plastic) are one of the causes of estrogen dominance in both women and men.

  • Spread of disease: Touching different surfaces with contaminated hands leads to the spread of disease.

Why do gyms need special cleaning?

Anyone who visits such facilities to exercise uses the equipment, and it is normal for there to be traces of sweat on it. Gyms also provide special mats on which people stretch and, accordingly, also leave traces of contamination. Since these are facilities visited by many customers every day, hygiene must be of a high standard and specialized.

According to the requirements, every workout room must have an air conditioning system installed to maintain temperature and humidity. Of course, many of them also have air purification systems installed. It is important to note that while air purification can have many benefits, it is only one aspect of creating a healthy indoor environment. Proper ventilation, regular cleaning, and minimizing the use of products that emit pollutants are also important strategies for maintaining good air quality in training facilities.

In their desire to provide maximum comfort, sports facility owners use strong disinfectants and chemicals, which unfortunately deteriorate the quality of the air we breathe and can pose a danger to people (allergies, skin irritations, asthma, etc.). Chemical or enzyme-based cleaning products kill both harmful and beneficial bacteria, thereby destroying the biobalance. In addition, they are effective initially but have no mechanism to ensure long-term effectiveness beyond a few hours (usually 3-4 hours), after which surfaces become colonized again by bacteria, including pathogenic ones. Frequent use of biocides can lead to resistance in some bacteria and create resistant pathogenic strains, known as "superbugs," in enclosed spaces.

What is the solution?

Safe and environmentally responsible cleaning: Biomatra® offers both.

  • It is often assumed that all bacteria are harmful and must be destroyed. In reality, bacteria have existed for billions of years and play essential roles in nature. Some are harmful, but many are beneficial. Conventional chemical cleaners kill both, disrupting the natural balance and sometimes encouraging resistance. Biomatra® takes a different approach: instead of destroying all bacteria, our products use probiotics to support cleaning in a natural and sustainable way.

  • Biomatra® cleaning products are developed on the basis of beneficial probiotic microorganisms, naturally derived and recognized as safe for use around people, animals, and the environment. Once applied, they settle on surfaces and continue working for several days, helping to break down organic residues and neutralize unpleasant odours.

  • Probiotic-based cleaning products are also gentle on materials. They do not damage surfaces, cause stains, or require abrasive action. This means surfaces stay in better condition for longer, reducing replacement needs. In addition, they can offer efficiency advantages — such as less frequent cleaning cycles, reduced labour effort, surface protection, and a fresher indoor environment.

All Biomatra products are available in different package sizes.

Comfortable and clean surroundings attract visitors to sports clubs, which is important for any business.
